Injuries and illnesses in the workplace are costing the Irish economy between €3.3bn and €3.6bn, according to the Report on the Economic Impact of the safety, health and Welfare at Work Legislation, which found that 2.5pc of national income goes towards occupational injury and illness.

The report found that there has been a shift in the perception of employers that health and safety measures are a cost for companies to a belief that the benefits of regulations outweight or equal the costs of compliance.  A majority of respondents in the surveys carried out for the report also believed that health and safety legislation has reduced accident related costs.
